Most visitors to health-related websites have an annual physical examination, which includes routine screening for breast and colon cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. They do this because they know that early detection and proper treatment can cure these problems or minimize the impact from them. We are now at a stage of research where the same concept is largely true for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders.

For those diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, three types of interventions have been shown to delay the progression of the disease: pharmacological treatment, life style modifications, and over the counter treatments.

Pharmacological treatments include two classes of drugs have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat Alzheimer's Disease: Cholinesterase Inhibitors and NMDA receptor antagonists. There are three Cholinestrase inhibitors on the market: Aricept, Exelon and Razadyne. Memantine or Namenda, is the only NMDA receptor antagonist which is used in more severe stages of the disease. Life style modifications that have shown a delay in the progression of the disease include mental exercise, physical exercise and social support and activity. Finally, over the counter treatments that have shown a delay in the progression of the disease include Vitamin E, Vitamin C, curcumin and R-alpha-Lipoic acid.
