Neuropsychological and cognitive assessments are used to test for memory loss, mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Traditionally administered by neuropsychologists or other specialists, these tests can be divided into two broad categories: cognitive assessments and functional or behavioral assessments. Cognitive assessments objectively measure specific cognitive functions such as memory, attention and judgment. They are designed to assess a specific brain function and used to pinpoint impairment in a specific brain part associated with that function. Tests range from simple paper-based tests to computerized assessments. Functional and behavioral assessments are subjective in nature and evaluate the activities of daily living and may often be completed by someone who knows the subject well. |
